    To reunite, preserve and protect

Currently, a non-military guy has a grouping which is obviously one soldier's awards, ca. 1860-1870. All components, including the medal bar, are in his possession. Everything has been cut off the bar (or water damaged off). I am going to try and buy all the lots (he's selling them individually) and my question is: Should they be kept "as-is", or should I attempt to restore the bar to it's original set-up? What do you think?<br>
What constitutes an attempt at preservation, as opposed to restoration? How far can one go to refurbish, before you lose the history??

    Hi Rick

First of all this guy should be strung up by his toes for separating a medal bar. I would say trying to restore it to how it was originally is ok, as pulled to pieces he has destroyed much of the history associated with this medal bar. Sure once you have pieced it all back together it will not be original, but it will be restored. This is different from repairing or jazzing up a piece, by returning it to its former state you are preserving a piece is history.

    Just my thoughts

      restore and reunite

      Hello,

Yesp it is a real shame that unknowing persons are seperating grouping, splitting medal bars, etc .... .

It is certainly woth the effort to reunite the grouping and im sure you wil have much joy from it once reunited again !!!!! , as said before in this thread it wil not make it more original but it wil certainly preserve the groupings unity and thas what count !!!! , the history behind those pieces, the human story's, etc ...

Friendly Greetings and keep the good work going ,

        Restore and Preserve!!

        Stogieman!
This is a classic example of a needed & valuable restoration project!
I think the key factor is that you are PRESERVING the integral elements of this chaps' personal military history. You are not FABRICATING anything (which many others have done, for both good and ill reasons).
Without this resoration effort, another man's life will eventually slip into obscurity. These medals & documnets are perhaps the only things this guy has left to memorialize that he lived at all. To restore them will be to preserve not only their history-but a small part of him too. I vote restore!
        Cheers,
        JeMc
        p.s. See you at lowell?

          SHUCKS (expletive deleted and/or altered)

Well, I won every single lot except the two rarest pieces. I bid very high and lost both. Now, I have 80% of a soldier's history. One brave enough to have won one of ONLY 606 awarded Militar-Ehrenzeichen, 1.kl., in the 1864 & 1866 conflicts. <br>
          AAAAAAAARRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHH!
          <BANG>

Editor: The previous cry of anguish has been temporarily suspended while emergency crews attempt to remove stogieman's head from his monitor. Thank you.

            Hello Rick

Could you try emailing the other bidder and explaining to him the dilemma that faces this grouping. If he is at all a genuine and honourable collector he would do the right thing and help to reunite this grouping. This is truly a sad day.

            Regards

              That is just terrible.

At least you can e-mail the the people who got the two decorations you didn't. Maybe you can work a deal with them.

Maybe we need to learn the name of the seller. I know of a few dealers who with seperate medal bars to make it easier to sell. For many it is just a business.

                No such luck!

I contacted both bidders, one responded with a "no thanks" the other didn't respond. I will probably keep the group as is until I can coax the other two out of the error of their ways. Financial inducements are usually pretty persuasive!

                  Dredged up because!

Dragged this up because persistance has allowed one of the pieces I missed to come back to the group. I also have found an original, smooth-armed 25 year cross that went with the group and I am negotiating for the last piece and one piece of ribbon! Theres a real story and pictures to come. Stay Tuned!

                    Rick...
                    My congratulations!

It's always rewarding to see a historic grouping placed into the collection of an individual where, based upon that collector's field of interest, it will be appropriately displayed in a proper context (am I being TOO oblique here?).

Put another way, it's nice that you seem to be dealing with reasonable individuals who appreciate the opportunity that you have given them to do the right thing, and not intransigent, stubborn, poll-rigging, ballot destroying, ballot box-tampering grouping-flaunters who cannot seem to be reasoned with!!!!

I'm sorry, Bill--did you want to see some more photos from the album?

I just saw All The Pieces when Stogie-Rick dropped by today: I was expecting the usual fraying into shreds, Condition IV- sort of bar that fell apart under its own age and bad storage...

Sad to say, that was NOT the case! The parade furled ribbons are in EXCELLENT condition-- the only thing that I can think of is that the wool backing on the bar had gotten "mothy" so the eCrap dealer tore the entire thing to pieces... a couple of weeks ago. What a... moremad

... but it WILL make Stogie-Rick's restoration attempt that much easier. Now if he only didn't have the ribbon hostage-taker in Germany trying extortion....

                          Okay, okay

I'll take some preliminary pix tonight. It's a sad story for sure. This will be the one non-St. Henry Bar I keep. Give me a few....
