    Book(s) Suggestions Please

Can anyone recommend one or more books which list Imperial German units with capsule information, such as unit formation history, commanders, and battle histories?

    Thanks,

    Shawn

If you know the unit name google it. I have found good results that way.

There are no books with all that information. You would have to find the individual regimental histories. For infantry regiments and field artillery units, there are a couple of books which cover their formation and organization, but generally don't have commanders or battle histories.

      The ones I have are:
      • Handbuch der Verbände und Truppen des deutschen Heeres 1914 bis 1918: Teil VI: Infanterie, Band 1 - This covers Infanterie-Regimenter, not Reserve- or Landwehr- IRs or other infantry formations. Each page has a formation history, a list of higher units to which it was assigned, and information on demobilization and what Freikorps and Reichswehr units it evolved into. "Infanterie, Band 2", covering RIRs and LIRs, has apparently been published, but I don't have it yet.
      • Handbuch der Verbände und Truppen des deutschen Heeres 1914 bis 1918: Teil IX: Feldartillerie, Band 1 und 2 - These have the same information on field artillery units. Band 1 has higher artillery commands and Feldartillerie-Regimenter. Band 2 has separate FA batteries, Gebirgsartillerie, RFARs, LFARs, Ersatz, Landsturm, and Garnison artillery units, etc. "Feldartillerie, Band 3 und 4", covering Munitionskolonnen der Feldartillerie, have also been published.
      • Formationsgeschichte der deutschen Infanterie im 1. Weltkriege: This covers all infantry units, but is a little less detailed.

There is also the "Histories of 251 Divisions of the German Army which participated in the War 1914-18", a published version of British intelligence summaries of German units. It is out of copyright, so you can probably find a free version online. It has errors, but it does give histories at divisional level of battle participation.
