What is this WWI style German helmet I found in a local estate? Has brownish colored finish but interesting raised ridge along the top. Typical WWI type German three pocket liner. Has rectangular black stamp on the inside rim marked " P.O. / M.N.8 (orB) VIII /Brn o (or s). Had black patenent leather chinstrap. Looked in all the books, nothing like it. Any ideas?

The book is titled "Elmetti" (Helmets). It is in Italian and English. A good reference for steel helmets of numerous countries from early WW1 to present day. I purchased it from an Italian book seller (I should be able to find the contact information and post it), but I would bet you could find a sales outlet here in the States if you are interested (can anyone help?). A little more on your helmet. Often you find Czech reissues sold as original configuration "Austrian" M16s, but the paint is a silghtly different brown and the liner, liner rivets and chin straps are generally replaced. Most of the Czech re-issues you see for sale do not have the comb on top. It is believed that the comb was strictly decorative (most likely to have a distinctive look). I am far from an authority on the subject and hopefully others can provide additional information. Again, if you want the contact information for the Italian book dealer, just let me know and I think I can find It.

The publisher can be found at www.tuttostoria.it
They speak English and it might be cheaper to buy the book there rather than a local book shop.
