    WWI Pilots Badge

I have not owned one of these before and I'm not seeing any with this configuration as far as the back is concerned.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

    Someone's idea of a novelty tie/money clip?

Imo not WW1 period and probably not even German made.

Evaluate the item, not the story and not the seller's reputation!

Bizarre to say the least. One you don't want.

An interesting, early 21st Century, "wearer's copy"...

              That's pretty bad.

If you're considering getting into this field of collecting, I'd highly recommend Stephen Previtera's new book, Imperial Sky.
              It's absolutely superb!

...and I find even hilarious that pantograph-engraved "AUG".

What did the "creative" author of that jewel mean?

Just to be back serious, from what I'm able to see in the pictures, this fake pilot's badge should be a copper galvano, the reverse filled with lead or tin alloy (also holding in place that "clip" suspension device), then silvered and finished with a chemical patina.

At least, the modern copies made by Horvath (Budapest) of Imperial Austrian Pilot's badges are much, much better and accurately made...

There is a lot of material that has been made since WWII from every period of history that never was intended to be a serious reproduction much less a fake of an original item, they are basically facsimiles or gift shop type items. I think that this badge is one of those kind of items.

Thanks to sites like this one for the last 12 or so years, very open and serious collectors not to mention the recent reference books on German WWI era Air related badges, I think that generally these German AV badges or very safe to collect at the moment.
