Coenen The Barbarian: A Fightin' Amish EK1 Winner

From the Twilit World® of Ricky's Believe It Or Not Odditorium Of Bizarre Arcane Primary References™ comes this period proof that all was not "Gentle Persuasion" or a "Joy To Be Simple" 'mong the Folks In Straw Hats 'N Sober-Colored Overalls.

Here we have a "Fragebogen," one of many long time in my paws for former officers of Feldartillerie Regiment 23, circa 1925-26--

Herbert Coenen, born in Crefeld St Valentine's Day 1894, was a War Volunteer 3 August 1914, rising to Leutnant der Reserve 24.3.16 in FAR 23...

winning both classes of Iron Cross and receiving a Black Wound Badge despite being a

    Mennonite.

After the war, he took over his pa's family business as an "Agent for Textile-yarn and Insurance." (Insuring that the yarn would not break? ).

Reecky I think you know the difference between Amish and Mennonite. We have several friends in Ohio/Washington who have Amish parents and Mennoite kids. The 'kids' stay Mennonite to enjoy the good life before turning pure Amish in later years and adopting the 'simple life'. As a Mennonite you can pretty much do it all and retire Amish.

Still, aren't Mennonites supposed to be pacifists?

Aren't we all "supposed to be pacifists". From the aspect of a "consciencious objector", that would not have been a popular standpoint in WWI Germany. I don't know the particulars but I'm not even sure there were grounds for avoiding the draft in Imperial Germany. Reecky would have that info.

I wonder if his parents considered Herbert a recidivist, since he kept getting medals and being promoted?

I would say he entered "Mennonite" as a joke... the same way folks in Britain enter "Jedi" as a religion on modern questionnaires. If he really was one... wouldnt he be able to spell it?
            Picture the scene
Herbert: Hey Franz look.... I entered Mennonatisch (snigger)
Franz: You old strudel burner you, it is actually Mennonitisch...
(Whole section give off loud German guffaws): Ho Ho ...zat Herbert... vot a Witzbold...
