It looks like it got some small pice of metall on it, and it seams to be all in one colour, so maybe its the wehrmacht service medal.

Thanks for your fast reply but i dont think that is the case couse this belongs to an austrian soldier and as you probably know the service medal was just awardet till 1939. Though bevore that he served about eight years in the austrian army but this does not qualify him for the service medal, or does it?

      But thanks anyway.

My computer cannot "see" gif format. If somebody reposts whatever this is here in jpg format, will be able to SEE whatever it is.

Here you go Rick, but I am afraid you won't be able to make out anything from the photo provided.

              Cheers, Ade.

My guess is that it's some sort of metal device on a solid long blue long service ribbon.

That's just a guess though. With that picture, it could just as easily be the pip off of a shouldboard that's going for a walk.

You and Lasse are correct. Looks like a Reichsheer pattern NCOs dress uniform with a Wehrmacht 4.

                    @ Rick Research

What do you mean by that?
"Looks like a Reichsheer pattern NCOs dress uniform with a Wehrmacht 4."

                    ....and whats a NCO?
For better understanding, here the whole pic:

                      NCO="Non Commissioned Officer"-anyone in rank above a Gefreiter and below a Feldwebel-Lt..
The medal is a Long Service Medal for 4 years.
For an example, see #3 in this thread:

Thanks for your reply but how could that be when the service medal was just awarded till 1939?
As mentioned before he was an austrian NCO and joined the Wehrmacht in 1938 after Austria was attached to the Reich. Bevore that he was in the austrian army.
So was it really possible the the time in the austrian army also qualified for the
Wehrmacht service medal? That would be unusual und new for me.

                        looking forward for your replies

I can not SEE gif format.

Yes, Bundesheer service not only counted for Wehrmacht awards, but holders of the Bundesheer crosses could wear them after 1938--
