    Kaiser Jager Pin

I was visiting some relatives in Switzerland and their Austrian friends gave me some WWI medals worn by their great grandfather . One was this Kaiser Jager pin which I suspect might be a cap badge. Measures 49mm tall.Silvered brass or maybe even solid silver hard to tell. Makers name on back "Bruier Schneiger , Wien (5?) . The inscription reads "Kaiser Jager Division 1916-17. Would like to find out any info on this badge if anyone knows what it is. I am assuming it's wartime because of the date. Thanks.

      Unofficial Cap Badges

      Hi nutmeg,

that is a nice example of one of the many unofficial cap badges adapted by the Austro-Hungarian forces during WW1 and usually worn on the side of the field cap. That particular example was used by the 8th Infantry or Kaiserjäger-Division on the South Tyrolean front - very much an elite formation. Your example is illustrated on page 172 of Siro Offelli's "Le Armi E Gli Equipaggiamenti dell' Esercito Austro-Ungarico dal 1914 al 1918" Volume 1.

      Regards
      Glenn
