    1870-71 Württemberg Medal bar

I'm trying to learn values for some of the less common Imperial stuff. It's a little harder to nail down prices on this with what little experience I've had with it. Practicing my German certainly helps, though.

What do you think of it and what would a reasonable price be?

No rush, and my luck it will fall outside my budget, but It's worth a shot, right? I love this early stuff, but it's usually outside my reach, financially.

    Thanks,
    -Todd

I'm not sure if someone might have played with this one?! The merit cross with swords wasn't instituted until 1915 (typical WW1 award!), and the long service medal is a post-1913 type...

I had figured from research that he merit cross was more modern (there are not many examples that I could find though) , but the long service one I didn't know about. How would this guy only have 12 years of service between all three conflicts starting from 1866? Were these things awarded retroactively (that wouldn't make any sense).

If the price is right, it's still neat for the medals. The merit cross doesn't come up too much as far as I can tell.

i am not sure for 100 % but i would say the jarn and the ribbons are new.

seems that the medals are good ones.

Do you think it is "new" in an inter-war way or that it is more modern than that?

I have a few closeups of the reverse if you think that would help.

I don't see anything wrong with the bar. But the ribbons were used for other, older medals too, that might be better matches.

Regarding the 1913 long service medals: They replaced the old style clasps. Someone who had the clasp, let's say awarded in 1880 and still alive, could indeed change it for the new medal! Some did this, especially if still wearing their awards - as military or civil. We are seing Prussian medal bars of Prussian 1870 vets ins civil jobs, wearing the 1913 medals. Might match here! But the merit cross as an WW1 era NCO award makes me pause. Same ribbon was used for the merit cross without swords and the merit medal, however...

I appreciate the thoughts. In fact I'm happy you said something because the questions you raise cast an unpleasant shadow on the bar. I think I'll have to wait until something really cool comes along.

              Thanks again folks.

                Hi,

I have long had a fondness for the reduction Centenary medals, but I think that in this case we may be looking at something not original to the bar. The bottom of the retaining hook for the Centenary medal is 10 mm, or so, higher than the others. This would allow a full sized medal to align much better with the rest.

Also, if it is of any help, that first ribbon actually goes back to the gold and silver merit medals of 1891.

Yeah, I figured I'd give it a shot since the price wasn't absurd and there wasn't nearly as much interest in this as the other stuff.

I guess there is a good reason for that.

                      It sold for $237

Even though there seems to be questions about the bar- it's still a nice piece.
