Were these medals awarded to soldiers from a Prussian unit? Specificaly Altenburg Saxony? The medal bar that belonged to my friend Edgar's father has this medal. Or was this medal only awarded to Austrian soldiers. Here is a picture of his medal bars and the upper bar has this medal, on his minatures this medal has a set of crossed swords above the mini medal. Just curious why there are no swords on the full size medal

          Hi

This medal could be purchased by any veteran.
The swords are physically on the medal itself. Swords devices were not usually added to medal bars in the way they would be to a ribbon bar or a mini-bar but there are a few exceptions.

          Kind regards

To be able to purchase a medal wouldn't the person have had to be awarded the medal and show proof he was entitled to wear the award?

It could be awarded to any soldier who fought in WW1 on the "right site".

One had to request and pay for it.
