    Question about medal bar loops

    Hello All,

Ok... I know cloth... but have not handled more than about 5 medal bars in my life... so I need opinions from you guys....

Yes.... this is about 'Ernst's' tunic.... but there are two loops that I can't quite figure out....

I have outlined them in the pic....... They are too close to the loops for the bar to be for other breast awards.... The tunic takes a huge bar (14 medals) that spans from buttons to arm seam....

My thoughts... are that perhaps the medal bar had two additional support 'hooks' on the back that would help with bearing the weight of the bar....

Has anyone ever seen anything like this on large bars.... or am I barking up the wrong tree (woof woof)

    All thoughts appreciated !

    Cheers
    Mark

    Hi Mark,

that can be "security loops. I saw plenty with one but 2 is a bid odd.
Some bigger medal or ribbon bars had one additional hook at the back to fix it better to the uniform. Unfortunately I have no pic at hands.

    Best regards

    Daniel

Who is Ernst? Pardon my ignorance

The reason I ask, is because if you can determine what medals he had/may have had, you could then tell what medals would have needed a little more support. That would go along with your theory.

Thanks for posting the foto. I found the thread after looking through the Imperial part, what an impressive set you have there. I was recently at Hohenschwangau Castle near Fuessen in Bayern, and if you ever get to see the medals there, ask to take fotos of them, as I only got poorer quality because I wasn't allowed to use flash.

            Daniel,

Thanks for that... I was thinking that they were for something like that but I had never seen a bar with those...

            Rolf,

Thanks... and I would love to see some of the sites and castles in Germany.. if I can ever goet over there !

            Cheers

              Hi Mark,

here an example of such a bar. Note the additional hook at one end.

              Best regards

                Hey Daniel,

It's hard to tell from the pic..... is the hook open at the top or bottom ?

Also.... Thanks for posting the pic.. I had never seen anything like that before...... are these fairly common ?

                Cheers

                  Hi Mark,

the hook is open at the top.
First came the big hook and the to close the needle. The big hook prevents the bar from coming up by moving and to open the needle.
It is quite uncommon. I noticed about one of twenty of this old style bars with this extra security hook.

                  Best regards

                  Daniel
