8th BAVARIAN RESERVIST'S STEIN from ANTIQUE SHOP THIS AM...

Hello folks. I spied this sitting on the top shelf of a consignor at a local antique shop this morning and was pleased to see that it appears to be a nice original from the Bavarian 8th Reservist Rgt. named to a "Johann Thalmayr" It has a nice Bavarian lion finial w/ panalopy of arms and woman's profile on the pewter lid, and the details appear to be mostly hand-painted. What I found especially amusing was the little quip beneath the handle which translates to "Rather should the Earth spoil than a Bavarian die from thirst" The lithopane depicts a member of Bavarian royalty I presume, and apart from a tight star shaped crack (damn!) through the lithopane, remains in very nice shape. It sure seemed a nice piece for the price...a few pix below.

        Looks nice Milton,

I have never seen one with that saying before. Nice motto esp. if you like drinking beer,

Here is one of mine to the 16th Bavarian Inf. Reg.

Of course we all know which famous personality in German history joined this regiment in 1914,

The lithopane depicts mad king Ludwig II (1845-1886). His reign covered the years 1864-1886. He was the patron of Richard Wagner the composer and also built the "fairy castle" Neuschwanstein along with many other building projects. His building nearly bankrupted Bavaria. He was found drowned in the lake behind his favorite castle.

The finial screws off on this one to reveal some coins to buy the next beer.

On other ones you sometimes find a photo of the reservist in this compartment.

This was a delux feature that the soldier would have to pay extra for when he ordered the stein/ krug. These rememberance steins were not cheap and basic examples cost over a months pay for a private rank. The top delux steins could cost up to two months pay for a private,

                          Thanks Chip,

I did not know about Wagner or the castle. I knew he went mad however.

These reservist steins are seriously under-valued by the collectors of militaria. They are real little gems of history and the height of the Kaiser's German empire.

There is some good buying in these out there today,

This is true. The vast majority of the ones I encounter are reproductions, but I'm glad I pulled this one down off of the shelf for a closer look. Thanks again for sharing your nice examples in the thread.
