1917 Cross - ID Please

Hi Everybody,

This belongs to a friend of mine in the States. It was given to him by his father some years ago. Unfortunately, he has been unable to ID it: he asked me but I haven't got a clue - wrong timeframe for me. Can anyone help?

Sorry the picture is small. I can ask him for better ones if needed but thought somebody would probably recognise this straight away.

I think this is a first appearance for this one here, which suggests something about scarcity!

Mecklenburg-Schwerin Friedrich Franz Cross, created 1 August 1917 for civilian men and women in the civil service or private business who had contributed to the war effort.

I've asked my friend for some better photos and also how he came by it. His father was over there (Metz amongst other places), and brought back various items of War Booty.

When you say scarce - just how scarce are these?
