Looks like a 1902 reunion of war veterans in Heyen, Germany.

I am not speaking as an authority who recognizes this medal - but that is what it says on it.

This would be for veterans of the Franco-Prussian War.

It's dated 3 days before the end of the war

I emailed the mayors office yesterday in heyen Germany , they did not recognize the date on the medal, there still looking into it.

Thanks for the info so far

        medal

The "geg" on it is most likely gegruendet, or founded. So the date is not related to any military action.

Would the iron cross style not be for war time ?

            cross

The Iron Cross shape is tradition as this is not an actual military award. Similarly US Civil War Grand Army veterans might give out reunion medals that look like the Medal of Honor from that time period.

Any more thoughts on the inscription?

I think it has pretty much been covered. I suppose the "geg" could be "gegeben", meaning the medal was given out on that date, but Pauke's guess makes more sense, that is, it is the founding date of the Verein.
