    1870 ek1 B

    Hi All,

here is a thickly overpainted 1870 type B ek1. Soldering looks period. The needle is brutal and I thought it was a replacement, however when looking more closely I think its original to the cross. Measures add up also, I made a comparison with a 1870 ek2 type A. I think it is a period private piece (and nicely worn) 1870. What do you all think?

    Best regards,
    Michel

I was watching this one on eBay and it went for a song. I liked it as well, although the hardware was a bit strange (imo unrepaired) however, other things had priority at the time.

if i am right i see a vaulted one.

all vaulted 70s ones are private purchased zweitstücke - or copies

the period 70s pieces were never vaulted

Yes, that is what I thought/said
                      period private piece
. The ones from Godet, with fangs and A-type are vaulted and considered a private piece. The B-type core anyway is considered a private piece as only the A-type core can be an awarded type.

                      Best regards,
                      Michel

PS I don't want to get into the "copies" discussion anymore, I except zweitstücke as the correct term. (Or privately purchased )

If this is an old Zweitstück, what is at least possible from my point of view, you made a great deal. I missed the auction's end... but I got the non-combattant 2nd class cross from same seller which wasn't to expensive either.

Maybe this one was hand vaulted by the owner. causing the core
to break.-------I know, not very likely but just a thought.

Thanks for all the responses! I guess I got very lucky

Greg, it doesn't look hand vaulted, so I think it has been dropped once. However that thought has crossed my mind too!

                            Best regards,
                            Michel
