I've never seen a badge that mangled.
Good thing Didier did straighten it out -otherwise we wouldn't be able to read the inscription.
To Ferg1 -if it was an aircraft impact that caused this you would have good point, but if Don D. is correct and a farmer with a plow did this damage then it would be a greater good that it was unbent.
But I have to repeat, I can't find any death or casualty that would match the name and parameters.
I think it was lost, and Lt. Kiel must have been greatly disappointed. I wonder if he might have mentioned it any letter he sent home. It would seem he survived the war and perhaps ordered another badge back in Germany.
A bit more detective work to do; I don’t have a period map in front of me but Didier, if you could related an accurate location where it was found and correlate that with the known airfields of Jasta 63 that Alex provided, we might be able to say if it was even possible that Emil Kiel was flying overhead. Otherwise it must be a different “Kiel” altogether.
