I would like to hear your comment on this "Spange"... What do you think, especially on the Bay.silb.Tapferkeitsmedaille... It looks really like a nice one... Sorry for the blurry scans... they are not mine!

Ditto - the appearance of the sculptor's name on the medal doesn't mean it's original. You would have to have a really detailed scan, or better still have the medal in hand to make sure it's not an electrotype copy. On the other hand, there is nothing in the photos to suggest that they are fakes, strictly speaking.Tim

Them ribbons are *way* too bright and shiny for my taste. Looks like it just came off the assembly line.

@Tim: I think the patina of the Tapferkeitsmedaille doesn't show off because of the over-exposure of the picture (see the flash). Haven't you seen this bar before, Tim? This very bar was offered on a well known auction house in München!

@Eric: I thought the same thing as you, but the owner said he never touched them and swear to be original. Only a closer inspection and the blacklight test can confirm whether or not the ribbons are originals. From the reverse the bar construction seems a solid brass period one.

BTW the seller declared himself ready to send me the bar without any obligation of purchase. I think this is already very positive, since I just bought one item from this person on Ebay and I am flattered that he trusts me so much without knowing me. Maybe I am just a nice person ...

As soon as I have received the "Spange" I'll do a blacklight test, compare the measurements and weight of the Tapferkeitsmedaille with the one I got from Detlev (Niemann) and send on this thread clearer pictures for your enjoyment and opinion.

Either that's a once in a lifetime "textbook" bar or I'm a monkey's uncle.

But then again Cladio, you have much more experiance than I. And if the seller's sending it to ya on approval you have nothing to lose. Go ahead and get it. Just keep us posted please.

To me the ribbons seems a bit to new, too. Actually it's not the immaculate ribbons to disturb me, but the "cold and syntetic modern looking" to the white parts of the single ribbons that concern me. But as you rightly said I can't go wrong with it, since I don't have to purchase it if I am not 100% satisfied with it. If it doesn't pass the blacklight test... then too bad! Furthermore I can really compare one to one the Tapferkeitsmedaille and I have also some original spare ribbon of the Bavarian to compare and touch with hand...

As Rick (Lundström) said more than once, and I totally agree, sometimes you can be surprised how such bars could look brand new, almost in pristine conditions. These bars were meant to be worn only in special occasions (parades, marriages, etc.). The rest of the time these bars were stored in closets, protected from daylight with mothballs...

Just my 2 cents...

I finally got it!

Dear fellow imperialoids,


I finally got the spange in order to inspect it more closely. The ribbon bar has passed the Blacklight test. On the other pictures the ribbons look like almost "to new". In person these ribbons are really nice and seem, in my humble opinion, to be original.

Tapferkeitsmedaille in Silber

The silber Bavarian bravery medal looks also quite alright to me. Weight is 19.8 g. Measurements are 34.27 mm diameter. The silber medal I got on single medal bar weights 19.7g and is 34mm in diameter.
