    ribbon width?

    Hi all,
I'm a bit confused about the width of ribbons used on medals.
I've got 2 Bavarian medals that have 35mm ribbons while most of the rest in my collection have 30mm ribbons which I assumed to be standard. I also have length of Hamburg Hansa cross ribbon that's 25mm and that puzzles me, too. Is that for the ribbon bar? I've no ribbon bars in my collection (please, don't get me hooked) so I can't measure for reference.
Are the 35mm ribbons a Bavaria variation or what?

    Thanks,
    Eric Gaumann

Like British ribbons of the same period, regulation ribbon widths often varied from award to award. After 1915, standard ribbon bar widths were 15mm and 25mm. Anything larger was the "issue" size-- pre-1915 medal bars simply used whatever the as-issued width was, whereas after 1915, 25mm became the accepted standard on full medal bars, and 30mm was the normal wasteful and pointless "presentation" ribbon size--which was frequently used in full medal bars as well.

      Thanks, Rick.
But what of the 35mm Bavarian ribbons? They're part of a Military Merit Cross 3rd class w/ swords and a long service medal. Just one of those things or strictly Bavarian?
