Imperial Entries in Third Reich Wehrpass

I have recently purchased a wehrpass which has WW1 entries, a subject which I'm sadly lacking in.

Can anyone help me with the entries. He seems to have a written description of his previous unit, Grenadier Regiment King Friedrich III No. 11?

It says that "Kaiser Wilhelm's Sister, Charlotte von Sachsen-Meiningen was the Chief of Schlessien Grenadier Regiment "König Friedrich III" Nr. 11".

The units he served in did include Grenadier Regiment "König Friedrich III" Nr. 11".

The photograph included shows him wearing a number of pins and what might be a ribbon button hole for one of his awards.

Wouldn't like to meet this guy on a dark night!

The wehrpass also has details of where he served during WW1.

Eastern Front for two years then the Western front.

Did all WW1 personel have their Third Reich Wehrpasses completed in this way?

This is, in my experience, an uncharacteristically thorough listing of Imperial service.

He was a One Year Volunteer in Grenadier Regiment 11 from 1 October 1911-30 September 1912. Such men were usually (not always) intending to become Reserve officers.

Promotions: Gefreiter 1.7.12, Unteroffizier 13.9.13 (normal for a 1YV), Vizefeldwebel 8.11.14, Offizier-Stellvertreter 31.3.16, Leutnant der Reserve 19.7.16. He received the Iron Cross 2nd 22.12.14, and the EK1 27.9.21, as well as a Black Wound Badge 25.3.20 (late awards like that normally indicated a returned POW). His Hindenburg Cross X was 17.1.35.

He served in Reserve Infantry Regiments 227 and 264 between 9.8.14-4.11.19 (this is the sort of sloppy and vague entry usually found-- and seems to indicate that he was NOT, in fact, a POW).

Recommissioned as Leutnant der Landwehr 1.12.36, Oberleutnant dL 1.8.39, Hauptmann dL 1.1.40-- but was switched back as Hauptmann der Reserve 1.2.42.

On staff of Commandantur, Stalag VIII. C. 26.8.39 (sic!)--11.9.40, though his March 1943 entry shows him as to be considered with "peacetime unit affiliation" in Jäger Regiment 49. (what the heck was he doing after September 1940-- he was obviously still alive, but the entries seem to have stopped!!!)

The upper left side pin is that of the SA-Reserve (II, I think), which was what members of the Kyffhäuserbund (or Stahlhelm?) were compulsorily enrolled in about 1934. The right and lower pin appears to be for the NS-Kriegerbund.

The entry on page 10 is certainly post-Third Reich!!!!

The award entries did stump me. I could make out the EK1 & 2 but the dates of the awards, upto 1921, made me wonder.

There is also a page (p26 early 1936 isue wehrpass) with a note, none of which I can read. Does any of this give a clue as to the amount of detail in the doc.

Page 41 has stamped entries from 26.11.36 upto 27.1.44!

Nice Wehrpass you have , regarding the late entry of the EK 1 => i have once read a article that these bravery awards where sometimes also awarded for bravery in batteling down so called communists, etc ... during fights in 1920 - 1921 ( Freikorps related !!! ) .

There is a article regarding such a award in either the German OuE magazin ( BDOS ) or the OMM , i have to search => this can take a while but i report back !

Page 26 is just standard medical clearance for healthy discharge with evaluation that he was fit for military duty if recalled, dated Sagan (better known for Stalag Luft III of "Great Escape" notoriety 1944) 10.9.40. The rest is a standard entry (usually stamped, since it took so long to write out!) about being instructed about military secrets, counter-espionage regulations, and the separation pay, food allowance etc alloted to him (or not). Discharged to Breslau.

Page 28 shows reserve duty call ups 22.6.-18.7.38 in 11th Co./Inf Rgt 49, 21.-23.4.38 and 4.-21.7.38 with the General Command of the VIIIth Army Corps.

Pages 37 and 38 are just the seniority of his rank dates authorizations.

Page 41 would have just the stamps in and out of his periodic checks of residence and fitness for duty... he was never recalled?

No little pink exemption paper (the "Muster F" form) was tucked in the Wehrpass flap? That would explain why he was in some "vital to the war effort job" and not recalled to military service.

As far as the late wound and EK1 awards-- IF he had any Freikorps service listed, I'd suspect that-- but according to these entries, he was simply discharged in 1919. There is no entry for a Silesian Eagle decoration, which I'd expect in his area. Sometimes the paperwork just came through late, and without the actual document there's no way to tell WHY. I've got one from 25 September 1919 that was authorized 23 October 1918, so such things did happen. Rick
