Here's a scan of the MVK 1st class award document. Unfortunately, my scanner is just not big enough for it all.

Here is the cross. Unfortunately, my scanner cannot cope with reflective gold objects in three dimensions, no matter how much I tweak the settings. Better piccies taken in natural daylight will follow tomorrow.

The cross is a bit worn, but much better in reality than the scans suggest.

Judging by the wear, Werner must have worn the cross quite often, certainly beyond the seven months that he spent in uniform between receiving the award in May 1918 and being demobilised in December.

Beautiful, even if it is a bad scan. thatr "keyback" system. Never seen it before.

And between huge rain clouds that turned the sky dark, I managed to find some daylight to take some pictures with a digital camera graciously leant by my wife.

The front of the cross shows a bit of wear:

And the same again with the retainer in place. Was this was a modification done privately some time after the war?

I don't think it's a modified example. I've seen 1914 EK1s with this type of retainer.

Werner group reunited

Back in July, Tom and I unknowingly bought two (unequal) halves of the Werner group.

Tom very generously allowed the group to be reunited, and it now lives here with me in Germany.

One item was not shown when the group was bought. This is Werner's miniature chain:

The reason why I have taken so long to show the miniature chain is because I wanted to find out more about Leutnant Werner first.

Yesterday I received a copy of the regimental history of FAR 80, and it contains a photo of the regiment's officers in August 1917.

This is probably the only chance I will ever have of finding a face to fit the documents and medals of a reserve Leutnant.

The missing bar

After checking this thread again, it occurs to me that the image of the medal bar is missing. This is the image that Tom sent me back in the summer - hope you don't mind Tom, but it is dark here now and my scanner doesn't like three-dimensional objects.
