    It's so-called patriotic jewelry. The brass base is part of granade ring (at least it should be) and the item is supposed-to be made by front soldiers. Worn in WW1 one by civlians to display their patriotic feelings.

      The first couple of these were probably made at the front but given the consistancy of these there must have been some exterprising merchant that latched on to the concept and made these in his factory/shop.

        They were commonly offered in catalogs of patriotic jewelry and were not made at the front. You can tell that this piece of "driving band" is not a real one, but rather just a representation of one. It's a pretty common souvenir and not military in nature.

          Chip could you clarify your statement ?

          1) Not real..as in not made at the front ...but made for sale during the period ?

          2) Do yoiu mean its a fake ? Not made during the period but in modern times ?
