    there are only 2 possibilities.
Either he was career Officer and won the MVO3 with X as LtCol and later could upgrade it with the Crown. Fitting jubilee medal and long service XXIV. In this case the SEHO is a peacetime EH3b/EH3a and the Austrian is a Military merit cross. A FJO is unlikely here, because a LtCol would at least receive a FJO Officer pinback cross or even a Commanders grade around the neck. The Austrian style of wearing "Kleindekorationen" is not typical for Germans.

OR he was a career NCO, received a Ernestiner medal or merit cross peacetime, also the fitting jubilee and long service award, reached the rank of Feldwebelleutnant and earned a MVK3 with swords later upgraded with the crown. In this case the Austrian can be a Military merit cross or a Merit cross in gold on war ribbon.

    Best regards

Something just occured to me... I know that the enlisted records aren't out there, but if the SEHO is rare on a Bavarian bar, would it be possible to tell from the MVO records whether or not there's an officer with this combination? (In essence confirming that it's an enlisted bar, even if an ID isn't possible.)

No officer match on a SEH-O hence our "reading" of this as a Cross or Medal, to a then-NCO.

Which would be even MORE unusual.

Rare and unusual... don't always mean TRACEABLE!

Even if untraceable, it's nice to know what it is versus what it might be. I didn't realize that it had been positively nailed down to an NCO. Any guess, given the rank of the recipient, as to whether the cross or the medal would be more likely?
