I haven't tried anything, yet. What kind of results can I expect from acetone? Is there any special trick I should know about using it?

If I remember right acetone is a component of lacquer thinner. Unfortunately most of the time it will do a pretty good job of stipping the original paint also. Maybe some of the helmet collectors might know of a technique to remove a cover coat without damage to the original finish.
Just some thoughts.
