    a damn spiffy picture...@1918

I got this from Detlev and think it's the rarest snap I own.
    I estimate @1918.
I've copped the photo but there's an officers' bayonet knot.
Not many NCOs got a breast award beyond an EK1.

    McC,

A very cool picture of a real combat vet.

I have a few Imperial bayonets that have original knots on them. Some officer's and the rest EMs. Can you post a picture of the bayonet and knot? I'm curious.

    Thanks!

    Tony

And what a rare breast award it is!

      Very nice.

Isn't it an NCO knot that is on the bayonet?

Rank could then be Sergeant, Feldwebel or Feldwebelleutnant (didn't those have the officer's sword and knot?) according to what I see from this pic...

          here's the Troddeln

Well, I'd like it even better if it wasn't an officer's knot-but it looks rounder, smaller and officerish" to me. I thought Troddeln were "fluffier".

            avantai!

But the real prize-the Wilhelm Ernst War Cross of Saxe Weimar-Eisenbach (362 total). In combination with the Gold (@700 with swords clasps from 1914-1919) and silver (@3,500 total) General Honour Medals, it makes the photo a real prize.

              McC,

Thanks for the pic of the bayonet and knot. It is the smaller officer's knot that was appropriate for bayonets. Further it is interesting that the knot is on the long 98/05 bayonet rather than the shorter KS98 that was more commonly worn by senior NCOs and officers. The frog seems to be suede as opposed to smooth leather when compared to the sheen on the belt. I have a brown suede frog on a 98/05 dress bayonet with an EM knot in my collection. Very interesting. I learn something new everyday around here!

Oh yeh, the decorations are killer too!

              Thanks again!

                Vizefeldwebel from the knot

Someday soon (I hope, I hope) THAT award roll will be published too. Like you say-- there can't have been more than a handful of non-officer recipients.
