A while back there was a thread on a Stahlhelm with a large Totenkopf painted on the front. I just came across a book on Weimar today that had this picture, dated 2 Mai 1919.

That IS a Heinrich Hoffmann photo.
Hoffmann took lots of Freikorps etc. photos during the 20s and wrote titles on them all with that characteristic 'white paint'.
His archive was still available via his son Robert until the 1990s, but it now resides in the Munich City Library. There are some fantastic pictures in it. Copies are also available via the Imperial War Museum in London and, I think, the National Archives in Washington DC.
Eva Braun was Hoffmann's assistant, until Hitler 'stole her away'.......
