Thanks Micheal. The letter A is discernable and also what I think is a W, but the S would have to be a guess. Don, I will try and get some measurements on Monday.
Thanks,
Peter.
Just a friendly suggestion. I would try to remove the vertdigris, if I was you. Vertdigris is not patina, it's actually attacking the metal.
Home remedies include vinegar and lemon juice or coca cola.
Let it soak for awhile and then gently remove as much of the crust as possible with a rubber dental probe, or ideally (if you can find one) a thorn from a thorn bush.
The best commercial chemical for brass and bronze that won't damage the metal underneath is something called Naval Jelly (used on ships).
Thanks Don and bolewts58. That is a great looking badge Don, I note the hinge on yours is slightly curved, wheras the one on the badge I posted is straight. That possibly makes the one that I posted a little suspect I suppose. I hope to get some more information tommorrow.
Thanks,
Peter.
Don, here are the measurements you were after;
Width across 4.75 cm
Height 4.5 cm
Weight 31g
I also attach a close up pic of the logo on the back.
Thanks,
Peter.
Thanks Don. I'm not sure wheter it is Tombak or Zinc, since I do not have it in hand. I was thinking of purchasing it and only have photographs, but I think it is best to give it a miss in view of your information.
Thanks,
Peter.
IMO, the badge in question is cast from an original, which would explain the difference in dimensions and weight. Note the difference also in the conning tower. On Don's badge, which is die struck, the radio antennae and periscope are cut out. On this badge the space between is filled in. Finally there's an overall fine pitting to the badge that looks like sand casting.
