    WW1 u-boot tally

    Hello
    Got this a couple of weeks ago,The picture on the bottom right is the original owner of the tally,During WW2 his son was also on a u-boot but unfortunately never made it back.The tally seems to be made of silk and the lettering is made of gold wire.

      Eric,

      Nice piece. In October 1916 all the previous U-Boat "Halbflotillen" were expanded into full flotillas and in February 1917, the new ribbons for these Flotillas were introduced, with roman numerals I to IV. Number V was introduced in September 1917. Gold for Seemanisches personnal and Silver for Technisches personnal.

          Families selling family materiel

          Eric;

          In regard to people selling family material, twice in recent months I have bought someone's grand-father's Militaer=Pass. each time for $8. In one case they sent some pictures as well, free. How much room does it take to keep a Militaer=Pass?

          Now I am trying to pay for a Militaer=Pass of a grand-father, very special (about 15 years' service in a famous Pionier Bataillon), and twice I sent $50, the first time "recorded delivery, return receipt requested", and then full-blown "Registered Mail, return receipt requested", and both disappeared, no receipt, no nothing. Put in a trace three months ago on the first, nothing from the Postal Service. I probably have sent cash to Germany 80 times in the last two years, almost always ordinary Luftpost, with no problem.

          Has anyone had such problems lately? Is Homeland Security trying to sniff out currency transfers abroad? The guy at the other end says that the Bundespost now sends all overseas mail to German Customs.

          Sorry about this prosaic question, but this is a problem. My bank wants $40 to wire $50, and German banks, I believe, want about $15 to take a US check. Some people have no use for PayPal, so sometimes cash in the mailbox works best (till now).

            Bob, I have a fellow Luger collector friend in Italy who manages all my European purchases. I then pay him with Paypal plus the up-charge.

              Since the September 11th terrorist outrage I have lost over $500 in cash mailings. All to Germany and all verified as having left the US. Looks like someone in the Bundespost has set up a private retirement account.
