I just purchased this interesting item. It is an example of "mourning" jewellry. I base this on the fact that there are two dates at the bottom, 1914/15. I have had other examples of EK's with a 1915 date, and these were examples of mourning jewellry.

The separate oakleaf center device and surround are actually copper color, that did not show up very well in the pictures. The size of the EK is 29mm x 29mm, slightly less than a prinzen.

The enamel is an example of "guilloche" or engine turned enamel. This is fairly rare in German usage, though common in other countries such as Russia.

The "W"s on the reverse were suggested by a friend could be for "Wagner". However, on further reflection, it is probably for Wilhelm.

        Any thoughts?

            I agree with Don.

There's literally scores of untold variations of these centered on the use of some form of an enameled mini "Iron Cross".

They are nice, and there are a lot of collectors who pursue them.

            All the Best,

            Alan

                  Nice

Its a nice piece , I watched it on Manions, quite pricey for me but surely is interesting and nice patriotic piece. Is the frame made of zinc, silver ? I cant quite tell. Double marked makes it more peculiar to me.
                  Thanks for showing it.

                    Vellocino:
I'm pretty sure it is not zinc. It is not silver, so by default, based on the color of the edges of the badge in the picture I posted, it is probably tombak. Once in a while Manion's does have something different. I had never seen one like this. I couldn't say no. It was really not too pricey for something different.

                          Her sister!

Hi, Mr Symonds I found her sister, same design, same double maker mark, the only difference is the color of the enamel , this one being black, it wouldnt be sweet to reunite this two cross sisters? please email or pm me if you are interested to give you the link, at half the price of the first one. Note I am not the owner or related to the seller who is selling this piece, just trying to help.
                          Hope this spark your interest.
                          Thank you

A red cross related piece? Any further info would be great. It measures 30.36 mm wide by 30.38 mm high. There are no marking on the reverse side. Thanx, Rick
