Here is a sword that is rarely seen,...and I had two of them walk up to my tables this past weekend!
This is an Austro-Hungarian Model 1850/71 Naval Officers sword and is either a second, or third model. The first model had a different back strap.
The KuK Navy only existed from 1850 to 1918 and was also called the "Danube Flotilla", from what I have been told.
I have kept this sword for the time being (I don't collect such swords) as I am enjoying the many mythological and highly nauticaly theamed creatures that profusely adorn the hilt of this sword. It's got it all, King Neptune and his Trident,...mermaids supporting a ships anchor, and angels supporting the Austro-Hungarian crown. It's really neat.
The blade is maker marked SOLINGEN on one side while the other has a Budapest pervayors mark. One side has an etched anchor and the other side shows the KuK national crest.
