I'm glad you have posted this poll as I have been considering a poll on similar lines on the kniepe.
Thus having only recently branched out to the imperial field,I consider any and all information shared as valuable as that gained through the regular forums.

Hello all,
Throughout my life i have always wanted to own certain items ...over the years i have aquired many,some were harder than others to get ,others were pure chance being in the right place at the right time.
My oldest military item is an English civil war medal with Henritas portrait on one side and Charles first on the other.This was awarded for merite in the second English Civil War.
A trafalgar medal ,1st issue by Boulton awarded to seaman/ratings who were at the battle.
Then i have a Waterloo medal to a Lighgt dragoon who was captured on the field of battle !!
An Albert Medal bronze issue Victorian for saving 14 men down a mine shaft......
A George Cross group to a Prison Officer.
Japanese Kamakazi dirks
Austrian Uboat commanders boxed badge
WW1 RFC wings in bullion
WW1 Australian Flying Corps Wings
WW2 George Medal to a member in the RAFVR
..the list goes on...though not a specialist i buy what i like to enjoy and as an investment.
Over the years i have parted with many items which i now regret selling,but luckily due to circumstance i have got a few bits back !!

the R.F.C /AFC item you mention are great , the ALBERT MEDAL ..now that would be fantastic
a mate of mine has a similar medal / pocket watch to a Yorkshire coal miner who in 1912 went back under ground to rescue several `pit ponies ` that became trapped after a landslide , he wont part with it ( despite my very large offer ) because the guy was later K.I.A with the ` BARNSLEY PALS ` on the first day of the SOMME battle .and he has his pair and plaque ( mint / boxed )

My Albert Medal...

For your interest this is the Albert medal i own,it is part of a group to Thomas Mottram a mine manager who if i recall rescued about fourteen people from a mine explosion.He kept on passing out then comming around and kept on bringing up more people at great personal risk..a very brave man. I also own his knight hood badge and CBE.

HHMMMMM...

3 main interests US WW II and before (prefer attributed), Soviet Orders, and worldwide orders.
I used to collect every order I could find but when I sold most of the collection to buy the house, I decided to focus when I returned to the game. So now I prefer orders (military and civil) but in 3d Class or Commander badges and above...unless it's scarce or I just really dig it. Something about the majesty and regal nature of neck orders and stars and sashes that appeals to me, so when it's "pretty enamel time" my ears perk up...my preference and $.02.

Eclectic is the name of my game...

I have a bad (depending on how you look at it) habit of scooping up whatever random items that strike my fancy at any particular moment as interesting historical or cultural relics. Granted I do have a few duplicates in my collection, but I am most certainly the type to assemble countless variations of the same object.

To actually answer the question... Ribbon bars are what I really focus upon. If I had to declare a specialty for that bit of my obsesson: Bavarian and Weimar-era vanity awards. Ultimately, it's those ribbon bars that tell a good story that draw me most - especially those that have the potential to be identified. If I had the cash flow, I would collect medal bars as well. For the moment, I stick with ribbon bars as they're a much better return on my investment - given what I get out of them. The most expensive ribbon bar in my collection runs about the same as an EK paired with a generic Imperial state bravery award combo medal bar. For me that seems to be a better deal.

I was interested in Australian Army WW1 untill i came accross a rare group of medals which including a Meritorious Service Medal awarded to a sailor aboard HMAS SYDNEY when it destroyed the German raider SMS EMDEN in 1914, the medal was only 1 of 5 awarded to the navy in WW1 all went to members of the SYDNEY. Dealers and collectors i've shown it to, say it is the only one they have seen. this sent me on my way with an interest in the navy, i now have everything this sailor collected in his 30 years of navy service, i have a great interest in the German navy as well, especially the EMDEN, what a great ship that was, and as they say, a gentleman captain. but any item to do with the Emden is very hard to come by.

when it comes to Imperial and WW1, I actually collect photos, postcards and other material for a very small localised area of the Western Front...anything within about a 10 miles radius of the small village of Barbas, near Blamont in Lorraine...it was German occupied and right on the frontline for almost all of the war...WHY?...well, its a long story ... I'm mostly into wound badges, and also 1- and 2-pice medalbars. But lately i've been drawn to enamel and cased awards, it's getting more and more expensive. Downthe road we go...
