What kind of Pickelhaubes is this?

    Hi All,
I just bought this from an old guy today. He said he thought his dad got it in WWI? I know it is an officer’s helmet and his dad obviously painted it.

    My questions are:

    1. What state is it from?

    2. Can the paint be removed?
    3. What is the value in this condition?

    4. Would it be worth it to restore it and value after restoration?

    Thanks in advance,

Where do you start? The shell itself is private purchase, and more than likely started out as a officer. The infantry spike and back spine are other ranks, with an nco pearlring around the base. Next, officer stars and "repainted" officer/high nco cockades. A horribly defiled other ranks plate from either the 10 FAR or 46 FAR completes the package. I would think that there is about $200 in parts for salvage. Here is what the plate started out as.

The mutilated plate is from the 2. fahrende Batterie FAR 46 or 2. Batterie FAR 10 (with the Colberg 1807 device).

Wow, this one's seen some abuse! It can be restored to its former glory (the plate would need to be replaced) but this would have to be more of a labour of love than anything else and would require that the helmet be dismantled. Some people might suggest just stripping it of its useful mounts, but if you're handy and feeling ambitious, restore it! The helmets that I have 'brought back' from this condition were rarely financially worth the investment of time but it sure is satisfying knowing you've saved something like this...

          Cheers,
          Arran.

My mistake. I overlooked the ground down Colberg banner. At least I had the regiments correct. Here is a shot of a helmet to either the 2 FAR (1 Battery) or the 3 FAR (6 Battery) with the "Colberg 1807" banner.

              Hi,

Thank you! It’s ok because I only had to give a whole $25 for it. I think I will take off all the parts and try to strip the paint off it. Any suggestions on striping the paint? What to use that won’t damage the leather.

              Thanks again,
