I've seen damaged EKs before. This one hasn't been shot. Damage like this can come from scrappnel or the shock wave of very close artillery explosions. A number of years ago there was an EK in an auction that was similarly damaged. It was offered complete with the soldier's billfold and papers that showed the damage from a piece of scrappnel that inbedded itself and was stopped by the EK the soldier carried in there. It was a pretty interesting testiment to the ferocity of combat during WWI. In hindsight I wish now that I would have bid on it.

This lot was offered in an auction 1987. The German Cross
was supposed to have saved the soldiers life (check upper
left part). On the other hand, the box was sent back to his
wife so who knows .
