    Information request for a personality

    Hi could someone shed some light on this charachter for me ...

    Hugo Josef August Alexander Bonaventura Ritter von Diehl:
    (a) Ritter of the Bavarian military: "Max Josephs Order," Nov. 15, 1870 and after.
    (b) Born Dec. 21, 1821, Würzburg; d. March 17, 1883, Munchen.
    (c) General of the Royal Bavarian Infantry and Chief of the General Staff.

    Ritter von Diehl

    Hugo Diehl was born on the 21st of December 1812 at Würzburg as the son of the riding master August Diehl. He entered the Bavarian Cadet Corps in the autumn of 1832 and was assigned as a Junker in the 1st Infantry Regiment König on the 11th of August 1840. Commissioned on the 27th April 1841 as an Unterlieutenant with promotions to Oberlieutenant on the 21st of August 1848 and Hauptmann 2. Klasse on the 25th of June 1854 he was assigned as an instructor in tactics to the War School on the 1st of November 1858. Returning to his regiment on the 28th of April 1859 he was promoted to Hauptmann 1. Klasse on the 16th of May and then assigned to the General Staff on the 30th of May 1859.

    He saw service on the staff of the 1st Infantry Division and the General Headquarters in Munich in 1859 and returned to the War School as an instructor on the 3rd of October 1859 and was promoted to Major on the 24th of August 1862. Posted back to the Central Department of the General Staff on the 15th of September 1862 and on the 1st of January 1866 appointed Chief of Staff of the General Headquarters in Munich. During the war against Prussia he was Chief of Staff of the 1st Infantry Division and was awarded the Knight's Cross 1st CLass of the Military Merit Order. Promoted to Ooberstlieutenant on the 17th of August 1866 he became commandant of the War School on the 7th of February 1867 and was promoted to Oberst on the 24th of May 1868.

    Posted back to the Central Department on the 8th of January 1869 he became commanding officer of the 14th Infantry Regiment Hartmann on the 1st of February 1870 before being transferred to the 1st Infantry Regiment König as its commander on the 22nd of August 1870. He was awarded the Prussian Iron Cross 2nd Class and the Commander's Cross of the Military Merit Order for Sedan followed by the Iron Cross 1st Class on the 18th of October for Paris. He was awarded the MMJO on the 15th of November 1870 for his temporary brigade command at Chateney, Plessis-Piquet and Moulin-de-la-Tour.

    Promoted Generalmajor on the 4th of October 1870 and appointed commander of the 6th Infantry Brigade he remained with this brigade until promoted to Generallieutenant on the 24th of April 1873 and command of the 3rd Division. Transferred to the 1st Division on the 24th of July 1878 he was awarded the Commander's Cross of the Merit Order of Holy Michael and appointed Chief of Staff of the Bavarian Army on the 16th of June 1881. Promoted to General der Infanterie in 1881 he died on the 17th of March 1883.
