Iron Cross Backing Plate

I have a screw back Iron Cross. My question is about the backing plate. The Cross and the treaded device are marked .800. The backing plate is unmarked and looks like brass with a small trace of silver plating left. Is it original or period replacement?Thanks for the help.

Chris, I have one exactly like yours except that the "PM" and "800" on the screw are reversed from yours. The retaing plate on mine may be brass but has all the silver plating. I would add a photo but don't believe I am permitted to do so.

I don't see a problem with your cross. The backing plate looks to have been silver plated at one time but has been heavily polished and lost that plating. I have also seen where the cross shaped backing plate was of a low grade silver and marked 500.
