Danes in the German army

I have a WW1 group to e guy named Carl Jessen who lived in TONDERN and whose HK doc was issued by the consulate in APENRADE. It was the 320 th doc issued, so I assume there were a number of other guys.

Can anyone tell me how this came abou?

The border shifted in 1920, adjusting conquest from the 1864 war.

Wot Chris, you haven't read "Tonio Kroger"?
There are large Danish populations up in Northern Germany and as Rick said-much of Schleswig Holstein reverted in 1864 and rereverted in 1920. It's quite common to find danish names in navy groups from up that way-and there first NSDAP election successes were handed to them by disgruntled Danish-Germans.
I once had a girlfriend from up that way and she spoke a very "Danish" kind of German.
There were also contingents of foreign Danish volunteers in the German forces. It was a steady job....
