First of all, Silver Oxide is only a part of the Patina.

It can never be fake but can certainly be accelerated.

Oxide can be formed in a lot of ways and at different speed. If a fingerprint is present before the Oxidation begins it will protect the Silver from being Oxidized.

Example 1: Mr X wants his crosses to be almost black so when he finds a very nice but recently polished 1870 Prinzen he puts it in a ziplock bag together with a boiled and crushed egg yolk. Next day his Prinzen is nicely black all over exept for the parts where he put his fingerprints.

    Fingerprint will be Silver colored.

Example 2: Mr Y likes his cross as it was issued in 1917 when he got it, well deserved, for the 3rd battle of Ypres. He meticiously polishes it every year. Too bad he is one of the few that got a very sulphurous sweat so after only a couple of weeks the cross has gone black but only where he put his fingers.

Fingerprint will be black from oxide.

Example 3: Mr Z got his grandpas newly polished 1914 EKII in 1975, just after he died. He immediately framed it and hung it on the wall . Too bad he managed to get fingerprints on it so over the years oxide formed but not on the parts that was covered with the grease from prints.

    Fingerprints will be Silver colored.
