Thanks Karl, that's certainly the case with Gustav Koch: I don't think he had a university degree, but nevertheless attained the rank of Oberfeldintendant upon retirement.

    Regards,
    Chris

Paul sent me xeroxes of his documents:

Bestallung as Unterzahlmeister for "former Zahlmeisteraspirant, Vizefeldwebel" Heinrich Jakob Gottlieb Wilhelm Heinecke, then in Inf Rgt 77, dated at Hannover 1 June 1908 and signed by the Corps Commander, General der Infanterie Alfred F.J.L. von Lowenfeld (born 1848)

as well as TWO count 'em TWO award documents for the XXV Years Service Cross to "Zahlmeister Heinecke"-- the first dated at Celle 14 April 1920 from the demobilization office of Inf Rgt 77 (signed by a Major scribble, not illegible, literally a scribble) and citing a Reichswehr Ministry authorization of 12.3.20, and the SECOND one for the same cross dated at Oldenburg 20 August 1920 citing another RWM authorization of 28.7.20--

this latter signed by then then Commander of Reichswehr-Infanterie Regiment 110, Oberst Leopold Freiherr von Ledebur (1868-1951). Baron Ledebur retired as a char. General der Infanterie. And oh, yeah-- he won the Pour le Merite on 29 August 1918.

Even a boring old paymaster can have some "interesting" paperwork!
