Bullion/cloth Breast Star!!!!!

I am wondering if anyone here knows anything about the Bullion Breast Stars worn on uniforms?
What uniforms were they worn on, when were they discontinued, and why?
The Germans, British, and other countries wroe these and the British ones are the most rare to find these days though I have only seen about three German Breast Stars of Bullion in more than 10 years of looking.
Does anyone have one to show? I figure they were worn in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Black Eagle Star

Here is a Black Eagle Star in Bullion. I think some refer to them as tinsel stars.

Does anyone know what uniform it belongs on? I understand they change from tinsel stars to metal star in the mid 1800s.

Here is a near mint example of the Order of Ludwig Grand Cross Breast Star.

This grand star pictured above was produced and used before 1850. This is an actual awarded Order of Hesse and only awarded to royalty.

Hi ccj,

nearly all the classical orders had this type of embroidered stars. This was usual until around 1850. At this time the stars made from metal were the officially awarded ones. The reasons for aboishing the embroidered stars? The stars were sewn on the uniform, so for every jacket the owner needed another star and every some years the owner needed a new star, because this stars were very fragile.These stars were worn on the same way like the later stars from metal.

You Black eagle star belongs to a horse blanket as a sign for a guards regiment. It is the same use like the british stars are also used as rank pips. The Black eagle order stars look different. Here is an example:

Thanks for the info. I was told the Black Eagle is a Mantel star which is the same as the trumpet or horse blanket I guess.

My Order of Ludwig is a real Order Star for the uniform though.

I like your star. Have you any others?

I do see a difference from the mantel star and the star of the Order of the Black Eagle you showed me. If you can educate me further I would appreciate it

I´m very interested in these stars.


Yours is definetly a star for the horse blanket (Schabracke) or the Pistol holder (Schabrunke) on the saddle. The Black Eagle Mantle stars are bigger than the usual ones but from the same extremely good quality. I dont have one, but I will look for a good picture.

Your Ludwig star is very good. I´m jeaous. An exellent piece!

Is that your Order of the Garter? I have been looking for tinsel Star of the Great Britain orders for years. I am mostly affraid of the ones I see.
My order of Ludwig came from a very trusting and knowledgable source.

Embroidered stars are really difficult to get. But extremely nice. The Artwork is everytime amazing!
