WW1 EK Ribbon with swords??

Dear All,
I have seen for sale a ribbon bar (for the buttonhole) which is a black and white WW1 ribbon with a crossed swords device attached to the front. Just wondering what the crossed swords signify - surely as there was a combatant and non-combatant ribbon for the EK in WW1 there would be no need to add the swords to a combatant ribbon bar??

Hi Adrian, your buttonhole ribbon is provbably not an EK2. Could be the Hohenzollern Knight's Cross w. Swords though! Most likely candidate.

Stogieman is right, maybe the Hohenzollern.
The EK ribbon was also the war ribbon for the Red Eagle and the Royal Crown Order, but this ones were rarely given in WW1

Hi,

Didn't the Hohenzollern Knight's Cross w. Swords normally come with a crown on the swords when on a ribbon bar? If the buttonhole ribbon is a single, it could date from pre-WW1 as well couldn't it? If there's a Hindenburg Cross ribbon hiding under the EK ribbon, then the swords would be for the Hindenburg Cross wouldn't they? Adrian, is the ribbon a single or are other ribbons present behind the EK ribbon?

Hi Mike,

NORMALLY the Hohenzollern should have NO crown on the ribbon. The crown was a normal part of the order and not an additional decoration like the crown of the red eagle. But in WW1 it came in use to show the Hohenzollern with swords and crown on the ribbons. You still can have also lots of ribbon bars of the hohenzollern without the crown.

Hi,

the black and white EK-ribbon was used in Prussia as some kind of combatant ribbon for many awards. As spiess told you for the Crown Order with swords, the Red Eagle Order with swords, the Militaerehrenzeichen, the Kriegerehrenzeichen and the Militaerverdienstkreuz. But yours should be the Hohenzollern. Compare my ribbon-bar posting, there is a pic of a Hohenzollern with and without crown on the ribbon.

Thank you all for your replies, I think maybe my description was not very good so I`ll try again.
The ribbon is very thin - like the type used on minatures, maybe only 10mm across. It is tied in a "bow" with a button attached to the back I guess to facilitate wear in a lapel button hole?? The swords are attached to the middle of the bow on the knot.
From your replies, I am assuming that as an EK collector this is not for my collection, but I am interested in how rare this item is and its value??
