This is an early bar. He could have worn an EK (possibly on black-white ribbon, agreed here) in the button whole.

Now if it is that early we're talking about pre-WW1, which is entirely possible?! All of the awards on the bar are typically pre-WW1 awards. Why shouldn't the bar be pre as well?
