    U-Boot Badge - Good?

A friend of mine picked up this Imperial U-Boot Badge at the SOS. Any problems with it?

Normally the obverse is fine and the hardware indicates a repro. Here though, I like the hardware but I don't like the obverse detail, which looks weak and cast (there also appears to be "flashing" around much of the inner upper half profile). Having said that, I definitely would not write this one off as a cast fake at this stage, knowing (or at least strongly suspecting) how some genuine examples of this badge were made by other makers.

My thoughts exactly Mike. I'd like to see sharper pics of the front.

90th Light (Chris) asked me to post these images of 2 original WW1 U-Boat badges which have this "soft/ cast" look to them. He thought that the unmarked badge with the snorkels removed looks to be the same maker as your one because it has the same hinge & catch.

              Posting for 90th Light (Chris),

note the hinge & catch on the badge on the viewer's left with the snorkels removed. Is this the same maker as the badge which started this thread ???

and is it "Meybauer" who seems to achieve this "soft/ cast look at times on some of their badges ???

                Hi Tom,

I have the same questions Don and Mike have. Try reading here:

                      Hi Tom,

Though I know some will feel differently about these and I know some have come out and said that some original badges can display this rough looking, pitted appearance, I think most would prefer or feel more comfortable with examples that have clear, more crisp details on the front.

If it was me...I would hold out for a better example. You're the one that has to feel comfortable with your purchase/collection.

Thanks guys. I will stick with my nice Meybauer example I posted awhile back.
