    Ribbon on medals

So you often times see longer lengths of ribbon and the shorter triangle ties of ribbon attached to Imperial medals. The longer lengths typically don't appear to be tied or stitched together ever. How were these worn or fastened so that they medal would stay on a looped ribbon?

The triangular ribbons are found in Saxon groupings and in Austro-Hungarian Groupings. It is a regional style. Most medals came with a length of ribbon. Some was to be used for mounting on a medalbar while in some cases another length was to be worn in the second buttonhole of the tunic. I've seen EK2s that also had a small, black safety pin used to pin it to the breast of the recipient during the award ceremony.
