    Austro-Hungarian Assault Troops Badge

    Hi,

I'm being offered this badge by a collector that I've been dealing with on WW1 Czech War Cross. I no nothing about it and wanted to know if it looks authentic and a ballpark value.

According to the reference, it's an assault badge to the k.k. 17th Assault Company, 17th Schutzen Regiment.

Depending on price, I might be interested but if anyone does collect these and is interested, PM me for contact details as I'm more into the medals at the moment.

    Thanks in anvance!
    Tim

    Here's the reference:

Here's a composite shot of the badge in different angles. Also has this other skull stickpin, and a 1 euro coin for size comparison.

    Thoughts?

How about an ISBN on that book? Looks like one I might like to own.
        thanks.

I would want to see the reverse of the one in the book first. This is not a common example, so extra care is necessary. Most original Sturmtrupp badges are die stamped and hallmarked on the reverse. As T.K. says, it is a minefield of reproductions out there.

                Thanks guys!

I have had real good luck with this guy on Czech WW1 awards, but I understand the Austrian pieces are heavily faked and some to a rather high degree.

Just found out he is expecting $1100. USD for this and that makes it a non-starter for me immediately. I was sent large .bmp attachments but resized them into .jpg format. Didn't notice any markings on the reverse prior to doing that.

                Thanks again!

IMHO an original doesn't worth that much.

That's a totally ridiculous price. I think the seller is on a fishing expedition.

Unfortunately, that is exactly what I was thinking as well. I told him I wasn't interested in it.

                      Thanks guys!

There are few rare Sturmtrupp badges that actually are worth that amount, but this is not the case.

                          T.K.,

I'm shocked by that news. I must admit, however, that the prices paid in Italy for these badges are the highest I have seen by far. When you find them here you can still purchase them relatively cheaply. For instance, I bought a nice aviation cap insignia (Luftfahrttruppen) last Spring from a dealer for $65.00.

                            Hello Chip,

The average price for the Sturmtrupp abzeichen in Europe is around 200\300 EUR, it depends from the type.
There are few very rare badges that could eventually reach 1000+ EUR, but we are talking about very rare stuff for advanced Sturmtrupp collectors.

I was checking an old auction catalogue out of 2005, same Sturmtruppenabzeichen was described as an item made after WW I, and went away for € 95,-.
I agree that this area is a minefield, as they are doing this better from year to year.
If it would be a real one, the actual price in Europe would be around €160,- (even italian shows) as prices went down, due to all these fakers....
                              Best regards Stephan
