May I ask for Moderator help. My MG08 thread appears here in the Collectors Forum but the MG08/15 thread is in Firearms. If possible could this be placed into Firearms? Then each wpn is reflected for all to add to.

Machine guns evolved from artilery. They were sometimes used for indirect fire, plunging fire into trenches.

MG AA usage
Wilhelm is of course correct, although these 2 photos are ''probably'' against aircraft or spotting balloons. Indirect Fire needed precise angles, fixed positions and use of different sights so these 2 'action' shots are certainly not indirect fire, unless the crews are bored and just fancied some harrassing fire. Most images of MG08 in AA use though are in prepared AA positions with free movement and sights so these are either staged photos or opportunity action against the air. The first one using the ZF optic seems more realistic in terms of engaging something at distance. It appears planned, targeted and with purpose.
The second suggests staged as by the time the firer sees/hears the aircraft it is long gone overhead before firing!! Jurggie is correct both are AA use, but like all our ancestors we have all taken staged photos
Incidentally the German Army did not use MG indirect fire all that much compared to the British masters of this technique.

Standard trench mount used in AA configuration. There are some superb images of MG08 in all sorts of AA set ups but this is the most basic.

love the pics too. do you think the pic of the British storming the nest if a stage? is that MG dude still firing while his commrades are giving up?
