H O H with Swords Cross of the Knight

    Hi guys!
I saw a thread awhile ago, where several folks posted their House Order of Hohenzollern with Swords Cross of the Knight medals. I know they were primarly awarded to officers or non-combatants of similiar stature.
IMHO they are a beautifully made award!
I've researched them a bit, but can't figure out how they were awarded or when and by whom??? Imperial & TR?? Also were many awarded? I believe there were several manufacturers?
Any help and education would be greatly appreciated!!!
    Greg

Greg, I believe about 8000 HOHmS were awarded, with most awards coming in the last year of the war. These were awarded by the Prussian Orders Chancellery, and were seen as an intermediary award between the EK1 and PLM. I have several of these from manufacturers such as Friedlaender and Sy and Wagner.

Thanks Vince! I found photos of TR generals with the award on bars, I assume they were earned in WW I? So none awatded after 1918? With only +- 8000 awarded then they should be somewhat (I hate to use the word) rare then? I also found pics with crossed swords & crown worn on a ribbon on the lapel similiar to the placement of the EK II.
      Sorry for soo many questions!!!
Again, I think it's a beautiful award & looks jeweler made?!
      Thanks!

I found this EK2 at the Pomona show this weekend - is this the same device you mention here?

            Hi Greg,

You've probably seen it, but HERE is a thread with some good info on the HOH3X.

As far as I can say, the manufacturers for the WWI-era silver-gilt examples were: Godet, Friedlander, Wagner, and S&W. There may well be others, and I too would be interested in knowing about any more.
            Best regards,

They are fairly scarce with the low award number. Keep in mind that the Kaiser did award these for service to the royal household after he went into exile, and these pieces are extremely rare and highly sought after. Hitler later banned this practice.

                    Hi Vince,

                    How are they distinguished?

I believe Godet was the sole producer of the post-war pieces, and they came in a case unique to the period.

Interesting. Given Godet's involvement in the manufacture of the Gorgo Badge, it seems clear that they were the jeweler of choice, so to speak, for Weimar-era decorations of a "Kaiserlich" bent.

Did the Weimar and TR-era HoHs have a crown? Certainly not swords, right?
                        Best regards,

All HoH have crowns and swords, when they are needed.

Here a notice about Godet as a manufacturer for orders in 1927:

The royal house order of Hohenzollern was instituted in 1851. Maker back than was Hossauer. Peace time awards were quite rare (just a hand full each year), and awards with swords were as rare til ca. mid WW1, when it became a rather standard award for Prussian officers.

The post-WW1 awards should be, if not retrospectively granted for WW1, without swords - peace time awards.
