Tom, this question cannot be answered for all imperial awards at once, but must be asked for any award alone. Regarding these two Prussians, the reverse is the one with the cypher. That's what written in the "Statuten", and can be found in monographs.

I think we had the discussion just recently, and Wild Card posted much to show it.

Thanks to all for the responses about this medal bar. What I am still wondering about, though, is why is a merit decoration placed between two long service crosses? Or, like on Brian R's bar, why are two merit decorations sandwiched between two long service crosses? Or, like on another original bar I saw, why is a Kaiser Centenary Medal placed between two long service crosses? Is it possible that, for all awards except wartime merit and bravery decorations, the medals were placed according to date of award?

I think, in a lot of ways, that these are examples of regulations being broken. The recipeints either chose to wear them like this or the jewelers screwed up.

Brian is right, the statutes were habitually being broken, either through expediency or ignorance. I have a bar where the crown order precedes the red eagle.
