    Fire Long Service Awards

In addition to military and civil decorations, a number of German states also had long service awards for firemen. Some of which are rather interesting.

Does anyone know if during Imperial times fire protection was a state run function (like the postal service) and not locally controlled, thus meritting state long service awards?

    Hello Carl:

An excellent question. Fire protection was a state-run function and in some cases a municipal function. Any state or municipality that had a fire-brigade organization usually had separate and distinct fire-brigade service awards. Other military and civilian service awards did not apply in this instance. There may have been exceptions in some instances, but this was usually the case.

    Best regards
