The number of wounds was indicated by narrow 2-mm red stripes.

No stripes on the ribbon indicated an award to someone invalided out of the service.............

I never could figure out what it was an image of and thought it might be the clasping hands with a small #3. Now I can see the dogs head. Gary

                Hi Gary,

No worries, glad to help as these marks are sometimes hard to make out and these type lists are worth their weight in gold, or in your case--silver!

I have several small marks on French ODM's and without this type of information, it's almost impossible to tell what you're looking at and good reference material is hard to find. Glad to add here for you!

I wanted to add some more information to the Signum Laudis.

The original bronze medal came about in 1890 and in 1895, the design changed ever so slightly.

If you want to know when your bronze medal was manufactured, you have to count the small laurel leaves on the obverse edge. Again, this applies only to the bronze version as the silver medal didn't come about until 1911.

                  1890-1895 = 64

                  1895-1918 = 62

I have this wound badge and have wondered about it. It looks like it is silver plated, or just polished?? I figured if it was zinc, and polished, it would turn dull fairly quickly. I've had it several years and it hasn't really changed. Were any of these silver washed? Gary

Thanks for posting all those variations torrian. I'm still not sure what my medal is made from, but at least I know they used other metal instead of zinc. Gary
