A pair of engraved EK I 1914 from the same soldier

    Hello,

I would like to show one of my last new acquisitions today.

It is two contemporary engraved EK I 1914 from the same soldier. The engraving is read
“Oberlt. D. R. Wehlte, Füs. Rgt. 36, 10. Mai 1915”. Within the last 30 years I have seen

only two or three pairs of EK I 1914 with engravings from the same soldier.

The special at this pair of EK’s is that one can see very clearly, that the official awarded
flat EK (marked “Fr” for Friedländer Berlin) has been worn in the field during the hole WW I
and the private purchased vaulted EK (hallmark 800) has been worn only on a dress uniform
    or something like this.

Maybe somebody can give me some information about First Lieutenant Wehlte?

    Andy

close-ups like these wood reveal a lot Moore

( your ek's have a good chance to be good )

            it wood be a first

and it looks like it can be done by the same man as my membership medal
((or done in the same firm ))

              Here are some better photos.

And by the way, the engravings have not a chance to be good, there are contemporary without any doubts.

Andy, those are a couple of fine looking crosses you have. I can't speak about the engravings but they look pretty impressive from my end.

                    well

its not the same artist ,and the quality is a bit Les good as on my coins ...

this engraving on the ek are rougher as my ( earlier coins )
I think the tool used was Les fine,,, as used on my coins
(and other engraving on prises and cups )

don't know if that is because the ek comes from a different time or artist ..

but the overall design follows the general type off writing ( sütalin ? ) very closely

so ,,,honestly ,I personally wood like to see finer quality ...

but that dos not mean I know this engraving is period done or not .

                    I just don't know

                    regards kay

Leutnant Wehlte came from the city of Halle an der Saale

I like this pair of crosses and I do not have any problems with
                            the engraving.

A pair of engraved EK I 1914 from the same soldier

                              Hallo Gentlemen,

Thank you very much for the kind comments and many thanks to naxos for the information about Lieutenant Wehlte. I can use it very well.

At least some words about engravings on EK I 1914. I am collecting EK’s especially engraved crosses for more than 20 years. I have study
the types of engraving of Iron Crosses from 1813 to the years after WW 1 very carefully. I know very well how engravings have been made
with which tools and how the process of the engraving took place in that time. With this knowledge and on the basis further characteristics
I can find out with 95 percent probability whether an engraving was made contemporary or not.

There are hardly such a big variety and differences in quality as in the case of the engravings of the EK I 1914. But as a rule one cannot
find such a high quality at the engravings on the EK as in the case of pre war civilian price medals or honor cups. Finally the EK was certain
like an article of everyday use (but with honor). I personally prefer engraved EK in the writing style.

                              Andy
