    That is an interesting photo JP, and I am also quite sure those did not end up as practice cannon balls. I would bet they are about to become bowl blanks.

      There were MANY more efficient and elaborated ways to produce more efficient ammunition than cannonballs in WW1. Although Germany was short in supplies, ti was not THAT short.

      These are surely not cannonballs or anything else to be fired from cannon. I far more tend for some decoration piece - soldiers built field chapels, memorials and many of these were partly/entirely made of wood. It is also possible some officer "ordered" some piece of furniture and the carpenters turned their lathe to earn an extra box of cigarettes.

      There come also some other artefacts of this shape in option, like makeshift electrical insulators.
