LIR 68 Dug-out Photo.

Thought I'd share this photo from my collection. It's on a postcard sent by a member of the 2nd Company of Landwehr Infanterie Regt Nr 68, and shows a very comfortable looking dug-out, complete with book cases and bunk beds with carved bed plates.

Lots of military hardware on display too -stacked ammo pouches, gummimaskes in cloth carriers and a few hundred quids worth of pickelhaubes on the top shelf:

Notice the extra "soldier" on the extreme right of the picture.....a handy substitute for those early mornings when it's your turn on sentry and you fancy a lie-in perhaps:

Great picture.
Wouldn't it be nice to go back and pick up half of that stuff to add to the
collection.

I like the pictures of everyday life, instead of the posed portraits. It gives
me more of a sence of the history that is attached to the things we collect.

Yes, there's certainly (by todays standards) some rare -and expensive- items in this shot. At least it's not as depressing as those photos of steel helmets being piled up to be pulped, or heaps of stick grenades and gasmasks waiting to be destroyed....makes you want to weep

As an aside, my Granddad can recall an incident during his WWII service in Italy when he watched a British RAOC Corporal destroy a pile of German helmets and weapons by driving a bull-dozer repeatedly over them. By this time my Granddad already had a couple of trophies acquired in combat of his own, including a Luger, so he wasn't that bothered at the time.....he is now when I tell him how much even a few items from that pile would be worth on today's market....

Excellent picture! Germans were well known for putting a little extra effort into their fortifications.
